On Tuesday and Wednesday, each year group were busy getting involved in countless science activities. Each group had a theme to explore…
Reception and year 2 were exploring the tiny world of the minibeast! They explored the common and collected and examined hundreds of creepy-crawlies. They made their own minibeasts and were even visited by a real life beekeeper!
Year 1 were journeying into space! They built their own rockets and even learned how to make their own jet engines using bicarbonate of soda and some plastic pots! And when they do get to go into space in their rocket, they’ll know where they’re going because they found out about all the planets in the Solar System with Tracey Dickens.
Years 3 and 4 had the most serious of tasks: they were using their forensic science skills to find the culprit behind the theft of our beautiful library clock. They collected evidence from the crime scene (with the help of a real policeman!) and used fingerprints, hair samples and footprints to track down the culprit from a list of very suspicious looking suspects. Every adult in the building had to cooperate with the enquiries – although Mr Owen struggled to provide a hair sample – and the detectives were relentless in their pursuit of justice!
Year 5 were getting all Kim & Aggy and using everyday things from the house to do amazing science! They dissolved things in vinegar, grew their own amazing crystals, created strange and exotic materials that defied the laws of science using cornflower, cleaned pennies using nothing more than tomato ketchup, discovered the wonders of bicarbonate of soda and even got to use real science labs at Kingsfield school where they discovered that Angel Delight is actually an explosive. Well, butterscotch flavour is at least…
Year 6 were becoming doctors and setting their own hospital up to save lives! They had a visit from a real nurse who told them all about what it takes to work in the exciting and demanding environment of a hospital and showed them how to take a pulse! The children set up into hospital departments and had to research their field to become experts in neurology, haematology, cardiology and so on. Then the phone began ringing and they had to save lives! Despite the stress and the pressure, they made the big decisions like real doctors!
On Thursday, once the dust had settled and we’d got our breath back, we shared all our experiences with the rest of the school, including an astounding video made by Mr Davies of year 1’s Space Odyssey.
We all enjoyed trying out new and exciting things with science! Hopefully, we’ve been inspired to find out loads more about science in our everyday lives.
Oh, and if you were wondering ‘whodunit’, the perpetrator was Mrs Walker! We were shocked and disappointed, but everything was alright again when she said sorry and put the clock back where it was. It goes to show that when the detectives of years 3 and 4 are after you, there is no escape… |
